Burano, yesterday and today always magical
Fishing island. In the 800 and 900 it was a place outside the world, inhabited only by fishermen. To get to the island you could only go by a rowing boat. When, in the ’30s, there were the first steamboats, it was a epochal event for the island. The modernity came very slowly, even progress forward slowly in the island.
We can compare Burano toto the Indians: they went hunting and brought food to families, as well Burano in those days: they went fishing and brought food for their families. The women were all of Penelopes who wove laces and waiting for their husbands returning from fishing. This was Burano, an island full of sociability, great humanity, an extraordinary place, even with big problems.
One of these was the healthcare: if there was need of the hospital you had to go rowing up to Venice, not very good thing.
Why are the houses colored in Burano? There are many legends. One of these was that the fishermen loved seeing them from afar when they came home from fishing. Anyway, more likely , during the period of the plague they used to paint the houses to try to limit the microbe: someone at that time probably added the colored powder and there were born these pastel colors. Now with synthetic colors we have a little ‘exaggerated colors, however, it is a characteristic of the island of which we are proud.
The residents of Burano are lovers of their own home: it is hard to find a faded home.
